As the leaves begin to fall and pumpkins start appearing on doorsteps, it’s clear that Halloween is just around the corner. While we now associate Halloween with costumes, candy, and spooky decorations, the holiday’s roots go much deeper. A Brief History of Halloween
Halloween, as we know it today, is a fusion of ancient traditions from different cultures. It originally stems from the Celtic festival of Samhain, celebrated in what is now Ireland, the UK, and parts of northern France. The Celts believed that on the night of October 31, the boundary between the living and the dead blurred, allowing ghosts to return to the earth. To ward off these spirits, they would light bonfires and wear costumes made of animal skins.
When Christianity spread across Europe, the festival of Samhain blended with the church's celebration of All Saints' Day on November 1, a day to honor saints and martyrs. The night before became known as All Hallows’ Eve, eventually evolving into what we now call Halloween.
In the U.S., Halloween grew into a more secular holiday over time, especially in the 20th century, where it became associated with trick-or-treating, costumes, and parties. Today, it’s a festive occasion loved by kids and adults alike—a time for spooky fun, dressing up, and indulging in treats.
